Nvidia has introduced NeMo Guardrails, an open-source safety toolkit for AI chatbots designed to ensure conversations between humans and AI remain on track.
This software uses large language models (LLMs) and allows developers to establish topical, safety, and security boundaries. Topical guardrails prevent AI from drifting into unwanted areas; safety guardrails include fact-checking, filtering out unwanted language, and preventing inappropriate content; security guardrails restrict the connections AI can make to safe third-party applications.
NeMo Guardrails can operate with various LLMs and third-party applications like Zapier. While the toolkit can be used independently via the open-source code published on GitHub, Nvidia has incorporated it into their NeMo framework and offers it as a separate paid service.
Besides hosting LLMs on the internet with additional guardrails to prevent malicious usage, the tool provides companies with enhanced control, security, and flexibility when hosting their own local LLMs. It might even be possible to use NeMo Guardrails locally and block forwarding customer or confidential information to cloud-based LLMs.
