You Will Be the Boss of Super-Smart AI Agents
The concept of AI agents will revolutionize the way we work and interact with technology. Unlike the Large Language Models (LLMs) we currently use, AI agents are designed with autonomy in mind โ they can reason, plan, and act on their own to achieve their assigned goals.
There are exciting projects underway to realize this vision and give us a first glimpse of what will be possible with AI agents. The voice assistant device Rabbit r1 and the AI software engineer Devin are just two examples covered in past issues. Experts at OpenAI even suggest AI agents may hold the key to unlocking Artificial General Intelligence (AGI).
Yann LeCun, a leading figure in AI development, provides in episode #416 of the Lex Fridman Podcast a compelling vision for how AI agents will change our lives. Yann envisions a future where we each have a "staff" of AI assistants, which might even exceed our own intelligence. This may sound scary, but he reminds us that the concept is not so different from effective leadership of intelligent people.
It's as if every one of us will have a staff of smart AI assistants. They might be smarter than us. They'll do our bidding, perhaps execute a task in ways that are much better than we could do ourselves, because they'll be smarter than us. And so it's like everyone would be the boss of a staff of super smart virtual people.
So we shouldn't feel threatened by this anymore than we should feel threatened by being the manager of a group of people, some of whom are more intelligent than us. I certainly have a lot of experience with this, of having people working with me who are smarter than me. That's actually a wonderful thing.
โ Yann LeCun, Chief AI Scientist at Meta
Everyone will in a likely not distant future have AI agents to orchestrate, delegate tasks and maximize their capabilities. Much like a successful manager leverages the skills of a diverse team, we'll tap into the power of intelligent AI agents to unlock new levels of efficiency and creative output.
๐ฐ AI Update
Image Editing Made Easy with ChatGPT Update
The image creation model DALLโขE 3 which is available in ChatGPT can now be used to modify created images.
To use the feature, click on an image generated in ChatGPT and follow the instructions shown and described in the image below.
My take: It's nice to be able to change parts of an image made in ChatGPT without having to use another program. This will make it way easier and also faster to generate what you envision.
Apple Unveils AI Model that Understands Screen Context
Apple researchers unveiled a new AI system called ReALM that can understand and respond to requests based on the information displayed on the user's screen. ReALM converts on-screen content to text, allowing it to function without image recognition.
The submitted paper states that ReALM substantially outperformed GPT-4, which received screenshots, on tasks involving on-screen information, despite having way fewer parameters.
My take: ReALM will be able to run on iPhones and give an updated Siri super-powers. The understanding of the screen context will allow Siri to correctly interpret and complete the spoken request.

Understanding LLMs: A Collection of Easy-to-Follow Guides
Ethan Mollick, Associate Professor at the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania, shared in a recent post on ๐ three guides which explain in simple terms how LLM works:
What Is ChatGPT Doing โฆ and Why Does It Work? by Stephen Wolfram
Large language models, explained with a minimum of math and jargon by Timothy B Lee and Sean Trott
But what is a GPT? Visual intro to Transformers | Chapter 5, Deep Learning by Grant Sanderson (YouTube)
All three guides are rather long form context and will require some time to get fully consumed. But if you want to understand the concept behind LLMs, they are worth your time. I came across all of them before reading his post, and I highly recommend them.
Furthermore, you might be interested in the blog One Useful Thing from Ethan himself, where he writes weekly essays about AI and its consequences on society. Beyond that, Ethan just launched his new book named Co-Intelligence: Living and Working with AI. Ordering it by 6th of April will provide you with access to a custom GPT as a book companion for free.
